Course description

This course, conducted in Italian, will focus on issues related to syntax, vocabulary, and register in written Italian. Over the course of the semester students will read and write various forms of texts (short essays, reviews, compositions, creative writing, interviews, among others). Grammatical topics will be reviewed in order to strengthen and broaden their vocabulary.  

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • read and understand a wide variety of texts in Italian, including newspaper articles, short stories, memoirs, and critical essays
  • write essays on a selected number of topics (culture, society, history and literature) utilizing complex grammar structures and stylistic devices of the Italian language
  • listen to spoken Italian, watch and understand movies and television programs (news, advertisement, fiction and documentaries) in Italian
  • make presentations on a variety of topics in Italian
  • debate in class and group discussions on a variety of topics (cultural and social issues and practices) in Italian
  • comprehend and appreciate different aspects of Italian culture and to compare it with their own

Evaluation

40% written and oral assignments, including in-class review quizzes

40% final presentation and project

20% participation
